Overview
Join us for an exciting, hour-long walking tour to the famous “Batcaves” in Griffith Park. Starting at the Brush Canyon parking lot, we’ll take a short, scenic walk to the Batcaves, a former quarry tunnel that became iconic as the exterior location for the 1960s Batman TV series. Though the tunnel is closed to the public, the surrounding landscape holds stories of California’s rich geology and ecology.
Along the way, we’ll explore local flora, taking a hands-on approach to discovering their smells, uses, and the plant communities they thrive in. As we approach the Batcaves, we’ll see how the park’s flora and fauna shaped California’s history. For example, learn how laurel sumac ties to Orange County’s citrus industry and the story of P-22, the “Brad Pitt of Mountain Lions.” At the Batcaves, we’ll reflect on its pop culture legacy and its geological origins. Bring good shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and water. Keep your eyes peeled for rattlesnakes, tarantulas, coyotes, bobcats, and more!
